Wellbutrin XL (Bupropion) Medication Information
Wellbutrin XL (Bupropion) is a medication prescribed to treat Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
MDD and SAD are conditions that affect the mood. These long-term conditions can lower quality of life and impact relationships, occupation, and hobbies.
Wellbutrin XL works by affecting the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine. Neurotransmitters are chemical signals the brain uses to regulate mood, and Wellbutrin XL increases their levels.
There are several formulations of bupropion, including Wellbutrin XL, Wellbutrin SR, and Wellbutrin IR. The dosage forms are NOT interchangeable.
Wellbutrin XL comes in three different strengths:
- 150 mg
- 300 mg
- 450 mg
Wellbutrin XL is taken by mouth once daily. Take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
The most common side effects of Wellbutrin XL include:
- Blurred Vision
- Diaphoresis (sweating)
- Nasopharyngitis (nasal swelling)
- Tachycardia (fast heart rate)
- Weight loss
- Xerostomia (Dry mouth)
Most people will experience at least one side effect, but not everyone who takes Wellbutrin XL will experience every side effect. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist for a full list of side effects that applies to you.
Wellbutrin XL should not be used in people who have a history of epilepsy or seizure disorders.
Some people who take antidepressants experience suicidal thoughts and behavior. The effect is more common in children and teenagers. Stop taking Wellbutrin XL and tell your doctor immediately if you experience suicidal thoughts or behavior. The effect is most common in the first one to two months of treatment.
Some of the common drug interactions with Wellbutrin XL can include:
- Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)

Store Wellbutrin XL in the container you received it in. Store it in a cool, dry location. Avoid rooms with a lot of humidity, like bathrooms or kitchens.
Discard the drug after the expiration date on the bottle.
Wellbutrin XL should not be used in people with a history of bipolar disorder unless advised by the doctor.
- Take Wellbutrin XL at the same time each day
- If you miss a dose, do not double-up; take it at your regular time the next day
- It may take several weeks to notice the effects of Wellbutrin XL, and the effects may be gradual
- Do not crush or chew the tablets
