Aricept (Donepezil) Product Information
Aricept is prescribed to treat patient’s with Alzheimer’s. It helps brain cell function, thus improving thinking, memory, and reasoning. The SR stands for Sustained Release, meaning that this formulation of the drug is released into your bloodstream steadily over a long period of time.
What is Aricept used for?
Aricept works by helping the cells in your brain to function better.
If you have Alzheimer’s, the acetylcholine levels are lower in your brain. Acetylcholine is the chemical that helps with your memory and reasoning, it is important to keep the level as high as possible.
Aricept SR will slow down the rate at which your body breaks the chemical down, so if you have mild to moderate dementia, this medication can be a suitable treatment for you. It will not cure the disease but it will slow it down for a while.
All medication can come with side effects and Aricept is no different. It does no mean that you will have them, but it is best to know what may happen.
Medical attention should be sought if anything unusual starts and the incidents requiring a doctor’s involvement include:
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea and vomiting
- Difficulty getting to sleep
- Unusual dreams
- Constipation or diarrhea
Although Aricept can help with dementia, there are certain conditions that it could make worse.
Your doctor needs to know about any heart conditions you suffer from such as slow heartbeat, sick sinus syndrome, or a number of others that are in no way related to Alzheimer’s.
You should also tell them about the following:
- Problems you have passing urine
- Heart problems such as COPD
- Liver or kidney disease
- Stomach ulcers
If you are about to have surgery then you should tell the health care providers that you are taking Aricept .
